Detroit Homes: From Classic to Modern

Founded in 1701 by French trader Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, Detroit is a historic city that generations of families have called home. Because of this, Detroit is full of beautiful historic homes. This isn't to say Metro Detroit architects stopped crafting magnificent homes in recent years; Detroit and its surrounding areas are full of homes and neighborhoods anyone would be proud to own. Learn more about all the historic and modern homes in and around Detroit.

History of Classic Detroit Style Housing

During the turn of the 20th century, Detroit was at the beginning of an economic and population boom. Detroit's "Big Three," General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, and Ford Motor Company, brought an influx of high-paying, stable jobs that made the Motor City a breeding ground for middle-class American life. People from all over the country swarmed to the area to get their piece of the American Dream. Waiting for these hungry transplants was a slew of contractors happy to feed these newcomers' appetites for a home of their own fit with a white picket fence and green lawn perfect for children to explore. Because of this, two dominant housing types emerged in Detroit: the American Four Square and the Detroit Bungalow. A quick drive around Detroit shows the dominance of these two housing types to this day.

Historic Homes in Detroit

While the Detroit Bungalow and American Four Square made up the majority of homes constructed from 1900 to 1950, other less traditional homes also rose during Detroit's boom. These homes–known for their inspired design–still stand as prototypes of American architectural beauty.

Fair Lane Manor

Built between 1913 and 1915–for none other than Henry Ford–Fair Lane Manor was constructed by five architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright. The home boasts a sprawling landscape with 56 rooms, a greenhouse, riding stables, a boathouse, and a children's playroom.

Ford-Bacon House

Built in 1897, the Ford-Bacon House was designed in the Queen Anne style and equipped with 27 rooms, 11 fireplaces, and a four-story bell tower. Despite the home's remarkable beauty, Edward Ford and his wife only lived in the house for three years before relocating to Toldeo. Today, the Ford-Bacon House serves as a public library.
