How to Best Determine the Number of Bedrooms You Need

Determining how many bedrooms your new home will have is a big decision. You want to make sure that there’s plenty of space for your current needs and any future changes. For growing families, this can be a costly mistake if you don’t think this through in detail prior to moving your family into a new home.

Consider Current Needs

A good place to start when determining the number of bedrooms needed to comfortably house your family is with a current needs assessment. If you're a family of four with two kids, then you might want to start with a baseline of four bedrooms so that your children have their own rooms and you can start thinking about wiggle room for guests and pets. Decide if your kids will be sharing bedrooms or not before you begin house hunting. Consider age gaps, room size, and what will best fit your desired layout.

Future Considerations

Furthermore, think about the future as you shop around for houses or as you’re sketching out your plans to build. If you’re building, then you should set aside time to meet with the experts so you can consider different design concepts and layouts based on your specific requirements. The home improvement professionals will be able to guide you and help figure out how many bedrooms will be necessary according to your family's future plans and lifestyle. Your needs will vary depending on if you're starting a family, downsizing as your children grow up, having your parents move in with you, or any other considerations.

Flex Space

Another way to determine the number of bedrooms you'll need in your new home is to survey the amount of "flex" space required. This is space that can be used for just about any activity as time goes on, and you can adjust the function of the room whenever necessary. For example, maybe you'll want to convert the space into a guest room, office, or art studio at some point down the road. Therefore, you might want to have a home that includes an extra bedroom that doesn’t have a fixed purpose when you move in.
